Science - Week of 5/3/10

I apologize for assignments not being posted for the last week in March and the month of April. Since these weeks involved reviewing for the ASA, testing, and the dissection of owl pellets and the frog, I made only one entry for those weeks. I did not go to the web page after this entry until today and noticed NOTHING was there. I must have not hit publish now.

Mon. 5/3/10 - Begin discussion of the classification system: Read pages 203 -209 and 211 - 218.
Do class activity separating students into groups based on common characteristics. Use the classified ads in newspaper to illustrate grouping according to common characteristics. Begin discussion of Carolus Linnaeus and how he developed the classification system in the 1700's

Tues. 5/4/10 - Discuss the 6 kingdoms, the 7 levels of the classification system, and binomial classification of different animals. Homework: Choose one animal or plant and classify that organism.

Wed. 5/5/10 - Complete chart of characteristics of the 6 kingdoms. Complete for homework.

Thurs. 5/6 or Fri. 5/7 - TEST (depending on schedule)

Mon. 3/8 - Review for test on GregorMendel's experimentS and discoveries on garden pea plants.

Tues. 3/9 - TEST

Wed. 3/10 & Thurs. 3/11 - Review for exam

Fri. 3/12 - Exam

Week of 2/22- 2/26/10

Mon.2/22 - Discuss deoxyribonucleic acid is DNA, what is DNA, structure of DNA (nucleotide bases and deoxyribose sugar and phosphate sides), and replication.

Tues. 2/23 - Choosing the Best Life during Science class.

Wed. 2/24 & Thurs. 2/25- Discuss where genes are located on DNA molecule. Ribonucleic acid is RNA, what is RNA, structure of RNA, and comparison of DNA and RNA. Prepare for Friday's activity.

Fri.2/26 - Activity - Using 2 base pairs and 4 phospahtes and 4 deoxyribose sugars, make a section of the DNA molecule.

Week of 2/15 -2/19/10

MON. 2/15 - NO SCHOOL

Tues. 2/16 - View Video Essentials of Biology - Genetics and Heredity

Wed. 2/17 - Discuss how the gender of a child is determined and multiple births (fraternal, identical and co-joined twins) Review for test.

Thurs. 2/18 - TEST on meiosis and Wed. notes.

Fri. 2/19 - Begin unit on DNA. Read pages 135 -141. Begin discussion of function and structure of DNA molecule and replication.

Week of 2/1 -2/5

Mon. 2/1 - Wed.2/3 - Begin the reproductive system. Read pages 709 -713. After reading, begin discussion of the 4 stages of life, concentrating on adolescenc. Discuss puberty and the male and female secondary sex characteristics. Read pages 694 - 700 and discuss the functions and hormones produced by the male and female reporductive systems. Discuss fertilization and names of the developing organism according to age.

Thurs. - 2/4 - Test

There are some student who have not returned their signed 2nd nine weeks report cards.
Also, the 1st progress report for the 3rd nine weeks was sent home Friday.

Week of 1/25 - 1/29

Mon. 1/25 - Introduce endocrine system. Read pages 686 -692. Choose a word from these pages and write word, definition, and drawing of word for word wall.

Tues. 1/26 - Wed. 1/27 - Begin discussion of endocrine system. Discuss location of glands and function of the hormones produced by gland.

Thurs. 1/28 - View DVD on the endocrine system.

Fri. 1/29 - Test on endocrine system.

PLEASE RETURN SIGNED REPORT CARD SENT HOME 1/15.

Week of 1/19 -1/22/10

Mon. 1/18 - NO SCHOOL

Tues. 1/19 - Complete discussion of the scientific names of the bones. Label handout using the scientific names of the bones.

Wed. 1/20 - Test on functions of skeltal system and scientific names of the bones.

Thurs. 1/21 - Discusss the types of joints, ligaments, and the formation of bone from cartilage.

Fri. 1/22 - Short test on Thurs. notes.
