Since these weeks  involved reviewing for the ASA, testing, and the dissection of owl pellets and the frog, I made only one entry for those weeks. I did not go to the web page after this entry until today and noticed NOTHING was there.  I must have not hit publish now. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Mon. 5/3/10 - Begin discussion of the classification system: Read pages 203 -209 and 211 - 218.&lt;br /&gt;Do class activity separating students into groups based on common characteristics. Use the classified ads in newspaper to illustrate grouping according to common characteristics. Begin discussion of Carolus Linnaeus and how he developed the classification system in the 1700's&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Tues. 5/4/10 - Discuss the 6 kingdoms, the 7 levels of the classification system, and binomial classification of different animals.  Homework: Choose one animal or plant and classify that organism.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Wed. 5/5/10 - Complete chart of characteristics of the 6 kingdoms. In this project, the students will calculate the length of their small intestine by multiplying their height by 4. After the length of the small intestine is calculated, students are to use materials to measure out the calculated length. Students were shown how to calculate the length and shown examples of creative ways former students used to measured the length of their small intestine. &lt;/strong&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;strong&gt;Projects will be graded as follows: 1.) following instructions 2.) accurate calculations of the length of small intestine 3.) accurate measurement of the material used according to the calculation 4.) creative way of showing the length of the student's small intestine.&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Students will receive 5 bonus points each day the project is turned in early. Activity 1 - Using a shell, make at least 5 observations.  Activity 2 - Identify a mystery substance making observations without using the sense of sight.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_0"&gt;Tuesday&lt;/span&gt; (8/18) and Wednesday (8/19) - Discussion  and note - taking about the steps of the scientific method.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Thursday (8/20) - Given a problem/scenario, apply the steps of the scientific method.&lt;br /&gt;Complete for homework.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Friday (8/21) - Students can bring in a bag of skittles for bonus points.  The skittles will be used for an inquiry activity applying the scientific method.&lt;br /&gt;                           &lt;span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_1"&gt;Pre&lt;/span&gt; -AP students will also be involved in another inquiry activity using different&lt;br /&gt;                            types of soft drinks.  After the inquiry activity, they will then use the scientific&lt;br /&gt;                            method to devise an experiment. First day of school. The 1st 9 weeks agenda, class rules, and class requirements will be discussed. The students will be given a handout to be taken home .&lt;br /&gt;This handout is to be read and signed by parents. Please return signed portion by Monday, August 17.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Thursday 8/13 - Group activity: Students will decide on a definition for the question "what is Science?" Then, they will list anything that they think doesn't pertain to science. A discussion will follow after groups make a list. Hopefully, some groups will not have a list !!!!!!&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Friday 8/14 - Students will create a biological design on their folder. They need to bring colored pencils, markers, or crayons to class.
