I apologize for assignments not being posted for the last week in March and the month of April. Since these weeks involved reviewing for the ASA, testing, and the dissection of owl pellets and the frog, I made only one entry for those weeks. I did not go to the web page after this entry until today and noticed NOTHING was there. I must have not hit publish now.

Mon. 5/3/10 - Begin discussion of the classification system: Read pages 203 -209 and 211 - 218.
Do class activity separating students into groups based on common characteristics. Use the classified ads in newspaper to illustrate grouping according to common characteristics. Begin discussion of Carolus Linnaeus and how he developed the classification system in the 1700's

Tues. 5/4/10 - Discuss the 6 kingdoms, the 7 levels of the classification system, and binomial classification of different animals. Homework: Choose one animal or plant and classify that organism.

Wed. 5/5/10 - Complete chart of characteristics of the 6 kingdoms. Complete for homework.

Thurs. 5/6 or Fri. 5/7 - TEST (depending on schedule)

Wed. 2/24 & Thurs. 2/25- Discuss where genes are located on DNA molecule. Ribonucleic acid is RNA, what is RNA, structure of RNA, and comparison of DNA and RNA. Prepare for Friday's activity.

Fri.2/26 - Activity - Using 2 base pairs and 4 phospahtes and 4 deoxyribose sugars, make a section of the DNA molecule.

Discuss fertilization and names of the developing organism according to age.

- Activities - 1.)Tape fingers and perform simple tasks, showing difficulty in skeletal/muscular usage. 2.) Raise and lower arm continuously without stopping, showing how muscles tire and could possibly stop working by continuously contracting and not allowing them to relax.
- Discusss function of muscular system, types of muscles (voluntary and involuntary, skeletal, smooth, and cardiac), how skeletal muscles work together in pairs for movement, and atrophy of muscles.

Fri. 1/8 - Test on muscular system.

Thurs. 11/19 - Activity - Record heart rate at rest and compare to heart rate after exercising.
Students will complete lab sheet after activity.

Fri. 11/20 - Begin discussion of composition of blood: function of plasma, red blood cells and white blood cells.

Tues. 11/10 - Begin discussion of function of circulatory system, parts of system (heart, arteries), why circulatory system of larger organisms are more complex, and the difference between oxygenated and deoxygenated blood.

Thurs. 11/12 - Continue discussion: veins, capillaries, why pulmonary artery and veins are different from other arteries and veins, and flow of blood through the heart.

Mon. 11/2 - Progress check on small intestine project explained Friday. Please see posting for explanation of project. Introduce respiratory system. Read pages 613 - 619.

Tues. 11/3 - Thurs. 11/5 - Discuss the functions and parts of the respiratory system, difference between breathing and respiration, difference between inhaling and exhaling, pathway of oxygen and carbon dioxide, why a person chokes, and why it is better to breathe through the nose rather than the mouth.

On Friday, October 30, the students were given instructions on a project that is due Friday, November 6. In this project, the students will calculate the length of their small intestine by multiplying their height by 4. After the length of the small intestine is calculated, students are to use materials to measure out the calculated length. Students were shown how to calculate the length and shown examples of creative ways former students used to measured the length of their small intestine.

Projects will be graded as follows: 1.) following instructions 2.) accurate calculations of the length of small intestine 3.) accurate measurement of the material used according to the calculation 4.) creative way of showing the length of the student's small intestine.

Students will receive 5 bonus points each day the project is turned in early. Each day the project is late, 5 points will be deducted from grade.

Begin discussion of the digestive system ( pages 621 -626): function of digestive system, mechanical and chemical digestion, path of food and what happens during digestion in mouth, esophagus, stomach, and the relationship of digestion to respiration.

Tues. 10/6 - Each student in the group is to teach the other members of the group what happens in the phase he/she made.

Wed. 10/7 - Review for test on the cell cycle and cell division. Return 1st nine weeks tests to use as a study guide for the nine weeks exam which will be on October 14.

Fri. 10/9 - Correct test and begin review for the exam.

Tues. 9/29 and Wed.9/30 - Discuss difference in cell division of unicellular organisms and multicellular organisms, the 3 parts of cell cycle - interphase, mitosis, and cytokinesis, and using a handout, discuss what happens in each phase of interphase, the phases of mitosis, and cytokinesis.

Thurs.10/1 and Fri. 10/2 - Using craft material, make models of the phases. Each student in the group will construct a different phase and be able to explain what happens in the phase to the group.

Demostration of diffusion and osmosis.

Wed. 9/16 - Continue duscussion of cell parts : cytoplasm, nucleus, and chromosomes.
Using a baggie with jello as a cell model, add parts as discussing these parts.

1.) There are students who have zeros on assignments. Students have been reminded that they can turn in assignments late for partial credit. A zero is entered as a grade until the
assignment is turned in.

2.) Please ask your child if he/she has the handout given on the 1st day of school that had to be signed and returned to school. Many students have not returned the signed portion.

Monday (8/17) - Students will be involved in 2 activities showing the importance of making observations and observations are made using the 5 senses. Activity 1 - Using a shell, make at least 5 observations. Activity 2 - Identify a mystery substance making observations without using the sense of sight.

Tuesday (8/18) and Wednesday (8/19) - Discussion and note - taking about the steps of the scientific method.

Thursday (8/20) - Given a problem/scenario, apply the steps of the scientific method.
Complete for homework.

Friday (8/21) - Students can bring in a bag of skittles for bonus points. The skittles will be used for an inquiry activity applying the scientific method.
Pre -AP students will also be involved in another inquiry activity using different
types of soft drinks. After the inquiry activity, they will then use the scientific
method to devise an experiment. This is due Tuesday, August 25.

Wednesday 8/12 - Welcome!!! First day of school. The 1st 9 weeks agenda, class rules, and class requirements will be discussed. The students will be given a handout to be taken home .
This handout is to be read and signed by parents. Please return signed portion by Monday, August 17.

Thursday 8/13 - Group activity: Students will decide on a definition for the question "what is Science?" Then, they will list anything that they think doesn't pertain to science. A discussion will follow after groups make a list. Hopefully, some groups will not have a list !!!!!!

Friday 8/14 - Students will create a biological design on their folder. They need to bring colored pencils, markers, or crayons to class. If this assignment is not completed in class, it is to be completed for homework.
